Important update to epubcheck

  • 1.  Important update to epubcheck

The Publishing Business Group of the W3C has contracted with the DAISY Consortium to update and ultimately revamp epubcheck. This is the automated system for ensuring that an EPUB is valid before it gets into the supply chain. It has become indispensable for ebooks; most retailers and aggregators won't accept an EPUB until it passes epubcheck. For the SSP community, I want to point out that this now involves more than books: soon, many journal articles will be available as EPUBs, which are more accessible and more suitable to mobile than PDFs. In fact the latest uipdate to Atypon's Literatum platform will automatically create EPUBs of journal articles.

The issue is that epubcheck has gotten out of date as EPUB continues to evolve. This update will bring it quickly into alignment and then will also do a more thorough revamp of its technology down the line. To fund this work, the Publishing Business Group has launched a fundraising campaign. I'd really encourage SSP members to consider contributing to this effort. It will benefit the whole community. Thanks!
