    Hi, folks--
I'm working with Access Innovations, Inc. to put together a series of free webinars on semantic technology, which you may know is something of a passion of mine. I've long thought that good semantic enhancement is the next frontier in publishing, which is why I'm happy to work with them on this. The webinar series is called "MEANING MATTERS: Practical Applications of Semantic Technology." It's about the power of semantics to enhance the value and visibility of content for publishers.

I think you might particularly be interested in the first webinar, which we're presenting on Thursday, May 7, at 2:00 PM EST. It's called "WHY KEYWORDS DON'T CUT IT: How structured semantics get far better results in both discovery and content search." (By the way, I've learned from Access Innovations that those are two different things. A taxonomy optimized for discovery of books or articles is not the same as one designed to facilitate searching content, though they can use the same vocabulary. That will probably be a topic for another one of these webinars.)

We have two terrific speakers lined up for this first one. I've heard both of them speak on this topic.

One of them is my friend Jennifer Parrucci, Senior Taxonomist of The New York Times. How The Times manages and uses their very dynamic taxonomy--and how long it's been in development--is really eye-opening. The other speaker is probably closer to home for you: Chris Rudyj, Senior Digital Product Manager at Project Hope/Health Affairs. She'll be talking about how they developed a health policy taxonomy and then implemented it across their systems, from content submission and tracking to publication and promotion--including the impact of the current Covid-19 crisis, and the differences in communicating to health professionals vs. the general public.
