    publishing, once "the best kept secret in trade book publishing," is no longer a secret: the top adult non-fiction category in terms of sales, religion publishing is a $757 million market in the US (2022) and was valued at $1.2 billion worldwide in 2020, according to the Association of American Publishers. Religion publishing is a diverse market with significant international sales and licensing potential, including a robust children's book market, books from religious presses, trade books from Big 5 imprints, scholarly books from university presses and independent scholarly publishers, books and other products on inspiration, mindfulness, spirituality, and more. 

    In this illuminating Publishing CareerBuilder, we'll hear from Richard Brown, Senior Executive Editor, Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, Steve Byrnes, Director, 1517 Publishing, Mahalaleel M.     PANELIST BIOS:

    • Richard Brown, Ph.D, is senior executive editor for Religion & Spirituality at Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. He previously served as director of Georgetown University Press, the University of South Carolina Press, and Westminster John Knox Press. Earlier in his career he was an editor at the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia, and at Pilgrim Press. He has been a member of several nonprofit boards, including Project MUSE, South Carolina Humanities, and the Association of University Presses, where he served as president (2010-2011). He also served as board member and treasurer of the Theological Book Network, which has facilitated the donation of over 2 million books to libraries and schools throughout the developing world. Brown is the author of numerous articles and essays in the Journal of Scholarly Publishing, Commonweal magazine, the Washington Post, and other publications. He holds a PhD in religious studies from the University of Virginia, a master's in theological studies from Emory University, and an MBA from the University of Louisville. Twitter: @richardbrownsc
    • Steve Byrnes holds a BA in English Literature and History from Concordia University, Irvine, an MA in Biblical Studies from Westminster Seminary in Escondido, California, and will graduate from GWU with his MPS in Publishing degree this Summer. He also spent over 20 years in the graphic arts and printing industry. He directs book publishing for the many projects of 1517 (www.1517.org).
    • Mahalaleel M. Clinton is an editorial assistant at Sterling Ethos, an imprint of Union Square & Co. (formerly Sterling Publishing). Previously, she worked in foreign rights at Curtis Brown, Ltd., and before that, at Context Literary Agency as an editorial intern. She has a bachelor's in Mass Communications from Our Lady of the Lake University, and is currently working on her Master of Professional Studies in Publishing at George Washington University. Mahalaleel lives in Brooklyn, and enjoys rollerskating in the park, and binging K-dramas with her cat, Magnus Bane.
    • Natalie Nyquist is a production editor at Nelson Books, an imprint of HarperCollins Christian Publishing. Previously she was an instructor and course developer for the editing courses at UC Berkeley. She has a bachelor's in biblical studies from Moody Bible Institute and an editing certificate from the University of Chicago. A 2nd-degree black belt in taekwondo, Natalie lives in Houston with her husband and son.
