The Future of Publisher Independence in a Consolidated Scholarly Ecosystem

Scale and consolidation are the driving forces in today's scholarly publishing ecosystem. Mergers and acquisitions are happening at an ever-increasing pace as the largest of publishers grow larger. Key pieces of publishing infrastructure and promising new startups are being purchased and integrated with the offerings of the largest commercial players. What does this mean for the independent scholarly publisher, the research society with journals, and the university press? Can one remain independent while relying on competitors for mission-critical services? How will libraries cope with “Big Deals” growing even bigger and reaching into every aspect of the research workflow? Join us for a conversation on the future of independence.

Angela Cochran, Associate Editor, The Scholarly Kitchen and Journals Director at the American Society of Civil Engineers
Angela is the Associate Publisher and Journals Director for the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), publisher of 36 technical journals. Prior to that, I was the Production Director at ASCE overseeing all production aspects of journals, a monthly member magazine, and book products. I was Managing Editor of Cancer and Cancer Cytopathology at the American Cancer Society and was Production Manager for Journals at ASCE. I am the Past-president of the Council of Science Editors. Alison Mudditt, Chief Executive Officer, PLOS 
Alison Mudditt joined PLOS as Chief Executive Officer in June, 2017, where her primary role is to ensure PLOS’s continuous innovation, bold leadership, and mission-driven differentiation in the field of scientific communication. Prior to PLOS, Alison served as Director of the University of California Press for six years and as Executive Vice President at SAGE Publications. Her 30 years in the publishing industry also includes leadership positions at Blackwell Publishers in Oxford, UK, and Taylor & Francis Inc., in Philadelphia. Alison is a frequent speaker at industry meetings and currently serves on the Board of Directors of SSP and the Advisory Board of the Authors’ Alliance. In the past, Alison has also served as Vice Chair of the Scientific Publications Committee and a member of the Open Science Committee for the American Heart Association; on the Executive Council of the Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division of the American Association of Publishers; and as Co-Chair of the Dean’s Leadership Council at California State University, Channel Islands.

Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe, Professor/Coordinator for Information Literacy Services and Instruction in the University Library and affiliate faculty in the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 
Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe is Professor/Coordinator for Information Literacy Services and Instruction in the University Library and affiliate faculty in the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. As the 2010-2011 ACRL President, she led the launch the ACRL Value of Academic Libraries Initiative. Lisa is currently Editor of Library Trends and chair of the IFLA Information Literacy Section. Other service includes positions in DLF, NISO, ARL, ALA, ILA, and LOEX. Lisa has consulted, presented, and published widely on the value of libraries, strategic planning, organizational innovation, emerging technologies, program evaluation, library assessment, inclusion and equity, information literacy, and teaching and learning.

Brian Hole, Ubiquity Press
Brian Hole is the Founder and CEO of Ubiquity Press. One of the key goals of Ubiquity is to enable sustainable and independent open access publishing at university presses, and they currently support over 30 through their partner network. 2018 has seen the company introduce a customer charter guaranteeing the ongoing operation of the company in the interests of the community even following an acquisition, and a partner advisory board that oversees the charter.
