Deanta's 2025 Trends in Academic Publishing Survey shows 67% prioritize workflow modernization, yet only 21% actively embrace AI transformation
Academic publishers are sending mixed signals about their digital future, according to Deanta's latest annual Trends in Academic Publishing Survey. While 67% of publishers identify "modernizing systems and workflows" as their top strategic priority - up significantly from previous years - only 21% are "actively embracing AI as a transformative opportunity".
Deanta's survey reveals a sector at a crossroads: 61% cite "economic complexity of academic publishing" as their primary external concern, yet many remain hesitant to fully leverage emerging technologies that could address these challenges.
"Publishers recognize the need for change," said Patrick Shafe, Commercial Director at Deanta. "However, there's still a significant gap between acknowledging the need for modernisation and taking bold action on transformative technologies like AI."
Other key findings include:
· 63% identify "inefficient workflows and processes" as their biggest internal barrier
· 85% agree that 'Modernising production workflows should be a business priority'.
The survey suggests publishers are increasingly caught between traditional approaches and the demands of a rapidly evolving marketplace, with implications for how the industry will respond to competitive pressures from both established players and new market entrants.
